About Anna Wright

Anna Wright grew up surrounded by the countryside and wildlife of Dumfries and Galloway in southwest Scotland. Her rural upbringing, combined with her love of colour, pattern, textiles and drawing, has had a lasting influence on her artistic style.

Anna studied at Edinburgh College of Art, where her creative interests developed from her early fascination with costume and textile design towards illustration. After graduating in 2006 with a degree in illustration, she began developing the distinctive mixed-media approach that has become synonymous with her work.

Today, Anna works from her studio back in the area where she grew up. Her creative process brings together a wonderfully eclectic collection of materials, including fabric, feathers, Indian ink and paint.

Animals remain at the heart of her work. Through expressive lines, unusual compositions and a playful use of materials, Anna creates animal characters that feel instantly familiar yet completely individual.

Her work has been featured in publications including House & Garden, Country Life and Artists & Illustrators.

Anna Wright's Animal Art

Animals are the main focus of Anna Wright's artwork, with birds, farm animals and other creatures of the natural world frequently appearing in her compositions.

What makes Anna's animal art particularly distinctive is the way she combines illustration, collage and textile elements. Rather than relying solely on traditional painting techniques, she builds her images using different materials to create colour, pattern and texture.

Her animals are often depicted with wonderfully expressive faces and poses, giving each one a distinct personality. A chicken might appear inquisitive, a bird mischievous or a farm animal wonderfully carefree.

This character-led approach means Anna's artwork is about much more than simply depicting an animal. Each piece tells a little story.

A Unique Mixed-Media Style

Anna Wright has developed a highly distinctive artistic technique that combines Indian ink, paint, fabric and feathers.

Her bold, expressive ink lines provide the framework for each composition, while carefully selected pieces of fabric introduce striking colours, patterns and textures. Feathers can add an especially tactile quality to her bird artwork, while splashes and marks of paint give the finished piece an energetic, spontaneous feel.

Anna's love of textiles is particularly important to her creative process. Fabric can introduce an entirely different visual language to an illustration, allowing her to play with pattern, colour and texture in ways that conventional painting cannot.

The result is artwork that feels both contemporary and handmade - combining the precision of illustration with the warmth and individuality of collage.

Humour, Character and Storytelling

Humour is an important part of Anna Wright's work.

Her animals often have an amusing expression or pose, while witty titles can add another dimension to the image. This combination of visual storytelling and gentle humour gives her artwork an immediate sense of personality.

Anna's work doesn't take itself too seriously. Instead, it celebrates the quirks of animals and the pleasure of finding humour in everyday life.

This makes her artwork particularly appealing to people looking for fun, colourful and characterful wall art, as well as to animal lovers and collectors of contemporary illustration.

Inspired by the Scottish Countryside

The landscapes and rural life of Dumfries and Galloway have played an important role in shaping Anna's artistic identity.

Growing up surrounded by wildlife and the countryside gave her an enduring appreciation of animals and the natural world. Her work reflects this connection, but with a distinctly imaginative and contemporary interpretation.

Rather than creating conventional natural-history studies, Anna transforms familiar animals into memorable characters through expressive drawing, bold colour, unusual materials and humour.

Her Scottish roots are therefore an important part of the story behind her work, while the universal appeal of her animal characters allows her artwork to connect with collectors far beyond Scotland.
