Dominique Salm - Wildlife Artist
Explore limited edition prints by Dominique Salm, an award-winning British wildlife artist renowned for her remarkably naturalistic animal portraits. From elephants, giraffes and zebras to birds and other wildlife, Dominique’s artwork combines striking realism with personality, humour and character.
Born in Jamaica in 1972 and later based in Hampshire, Dominique developed her passion for art and wildlife through her illustration training and extensive observation of animals. Her work has subsequently attracted international attention, with exhibitions and collectors in the UK and overseas.
Dominique Salm’s Wildlife Art
One of the defining characteristics of Dominique Salm’s artwork is the way she isolates individual animals against clean, uncluttered backgrounds. This contemporary approach gives each subject a strong graphic presence while allowing the animal’s expression, posture and personality to become the central focus.
Dominique often spends time observing wildlife in its natural environment and regularly travels to Africa, including Kenya, to study her subjects. She works from her own photographic references and seeks to capture a particular moment that reveals something of an animal’s character.
Her wildlife paintings are highly detailed but also have an unmistakable sense of wit and individuality. Dominique has commented on her interest in the 'human' qualities she sees in animals - which helps explain the expressive personality present in many of her paintings.
Award-Winning Wildlife Artwork
Dominique Salm has received significant recognition for her wildlife art. She won the BBC Wildlife Artist of the Year 2009 - World Mammals category, and her work has also been shortlisted for the David Shepherd Wildlife Artist of the Year. In 2013, her painting Rubbernecking was selected for the international Birds in Art exhibition at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum in Wisconsin.
Dominique has also supported wildlife conservation initiatives, including the London Elephant Parade in aid of Elephant Family.
