About Martin Leighton
Born in Montrose, Scotland in 1951, Martin Leighton has lived in Weymouth, Dorset since he was two years old. A self-taught artist, he works primarily in oils on canvas and has been painting professionally since 2003.
Martin previously ran a gallery and working studio close to Weymouth Harbour in a converted Grade II listed building. He continues to develop his work for exhibitions, commissions and collectors.
Living on the Dorset coast has provided Martin with an ever-changing source of inspiration, particularly through the constantly shifting effects of natural light. However, it is the human figure and portraiture that remain among his most compelling subjects.
Martin Leighton's Figurative Art
Martin Leighton's figurative paintings are concerned with much more than accurately depicting the human form. He aims to create images that convey mood, atmosphere, sensuality and emotion, giving each figure a distinctive presence.
The artist has described painting the human form as a constant challenge, particularly in capturing realistic skin tones and the subtle atmosphere surrounding a figure. His approach seeks to create work that feels realistic without becoming simply photographic.
This gives his figurative artwork a particularly intimate quality, making his limited edition prints well suited to contemporary interiors, bedrooms, dressing rooms and spaces where expressive artwork can become a focal point.
Contemporary Female Figurative Art
A recurring theme within Martin's work is the female form. His figurative compositions explore pose, shape, light and atmosphere, often presenting the figure in a way that feels both elegant and contemplative.
For collectors searching for figurative art, female form artwork, contemporary nude art or expressive British paintings, Martin Leighton's work offers a distinctive combination of traditional oil painting skills and contemporary subject matter.
