About Sean Durkin
Born in Middlesbrough in 1964, Sean Durkin is a contemporary British artist whose work is strongly influenced by the character and atmosphere of northern England. His paintings capture everyday British life with warmth, wit and a distinctive sense of nostalgia.
Sean's route into painting is particularly unusual. When he was eight years old, his father, John Durkin, famously stole a painting by L.S. Lowry from Middlesbrough Art Gallery and held it for ransom. His demands included improvements to the gallery's security and opening hours, as well as the memorable request that the mayor raffle his underpants for charity.
A young Sean discovered the Lowry painting on the family mantelpiece the following morning, and the atmosphere of the artwork and its famous 'matchstick' figures made a lasting impression on him and would eventually influence his own artistic career.
Sean Durkin's Artistic Style
Sean Durkin's artwork is full of irony, narrative and character. His paintings often depict British streets and communities in a way that feels nostalgic without becoming sentimental.
His Lowry influence can be seen in his interest in working communities, urban landscapes and groups of small figures, but Sean has developed his own highly distinctive visual language. His richly textured paintings invite the viewer to look closely and imagine what is happening within the scene.
His trademark policeman and robber characters are a recurring visual reference to his family history and add a playful thread to many of his works.
Art with a Story to Tell
Perhaps the defining feature of Sean Durkin's work is its storytelling quality. His paintings show not just a street, pub or town scene; but also give the suggestion of something interesting has just, or is about to, happen.
This narrative quality makes Sean Durkin prints particularly engaging pieces of wall art. Viewers can return to the artwork and discover new details, characters and possible stories within the scene.
His work is especially appealing to collectors looking for British contemporary art, Lowry-inspired artwork, northern art, industrial scenes and nostalgic British wall art.
